Living a Valued Life

Adapting to Challenges

It is a challenging part of the human experience that we all feel difficult emotions and struggle with unpleasant thoughts and feelings. When we are feeling depressed, anxious, bored, overwhelmed, scared, or lonely it can be hard to know where to start. We may worry that our problems are too much for our loved ones, coworkers, or employer to handle. During times like this, we tell ourselves to muster our grit to meet the challenge with everything we have. And sometimes this works.

But sometimes the solutions that we’ve used in the past no longer work for us in the present moment. In times like this, it is helpful to have an outside perspective to encourage us to try new things, adapt, and be flexible in our approach. To yield so that we can bend and not break.

Depression

The past guides the present. Memories of how things were in the past can be useful as we make informed decisions, but memories can also be difficult to manage if we feel heavy or burdened by them. Instead, we might aspire to hold the past lightly in our attention, allowing that it exists, and allowing that it is neither here nor now.

Uncertainty

It is in our nature to seek to control and eliminate the uncertainty of life. Untold hours and resources are put toward controlling uncertainty every day, and often we find that our efforts fail to create certainty. In fact, we might feel more anxious over time as we begin to live a substitute life, rejecting the present moment in favor of an unrealized ideal.

Traumatic Stress

Some wounds are so deep, or they have been with us for so long, that our body has adapted to their presence. Traumatic stress can lead to repeated experiences of terror and isolation long after the event of onset. Healing from trauma moves at your pace as you explore new ways of creating safety for yourself.

Lack of Direction

Whether you are entering the workforce for the first time, or you are pivoting to a second career after a mid-life realization, it is essential to your happiness and productivity that you connect your actions to closely held personal values and interests.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you want to know?

If you don’t see an answer to your question below, feel free to schedule a free initial consultation today.

How do I know if I need therapy?

Individual psychotherapy, or mental health counseling, is useful for individuals who would like to change and grow by modifying their behavior or their attitudes. Most people begin productive therapy with the idea that “something isn’t working for me.” The therapist can then collaborate with the client in order to create goals toward “something that works for me.”

Can individual therapy help my relationships?

Yes, sometimes. The main challenge in most relationships can be traced back to communication, and while it is often best for every party in a relationship to work on improving their communication skills, either individual can help contribute to better communication by learning to better address their own needs as well as the needs of the other party. For example, many individuals who are struggling with emotional dysregulation can contribute to better communication by implementing emotional regulation strategies learned in individual therapy.

How do I know if I need career counseling?

Career counseling is focused on developing a greater understanding of your values and interests in the context of the vocational world. Goals that career counseling can help with include:

  • Choose a college major that reflects my interests
  • Develop an understanding of work-settings that match my values
  • Choose a new career with a lower risk of burnout
  • Decide whether to change vocations or simply seek a new employer
What does leadership consultation look like?

Leadership consultation takes place either in our private offices or through a private virtual meeting. During our first 60-minute meeting we will develop clear goals and discuss a timeline according to your expectations. Typically there will be individual work to be completed between meetings, and meetings will be scheduled once or twice per week.

What does Group Change consultation look like?

Groups can be as small as a joint partnership or include as many as 50 people, and the approach is tailored to the size and needs of the group. Needs vary greatly based on leadership goals, interpersonal dynamics, and concurrent issues within the organization, so typically it is best to plan on one or two leadership consultation meetings solely for the purpose of evaluating and planning for Group Change.

Do you offer couples counseling?

No, at this time we do not offer marriage counseling or couples counseling, however, we do frequently work with individuals who wish to improve or strengthen their relationships.

The Origin of Work Life

An Authentic Journey

Life Work Counseling is built on the idea that seeking to balance work and life is a well-meaning however misguided proposition. That instead of seeking to add and subtract portions of each, we benefit more from deepening our understanding of how these two concepts, work & life, are intertwined with one another. That once we have the perspective to see how our idea of “self” is so often embedded in our ideas about work and life, we can grow more flexible and yielding, and thereby live more intentionally with a stronger sense of connection to ourselves and others.

LWC is a partnership of licensed professional counselors with diverse professional backgrounds after endeavoring to change careers mid-life. Our professional identities are founded on the first-hand experiences of responding to our own needs in the face of unusual timing and overcoming the challenge of misguided self-limiting standards. We are committed to the work of pursuing meaning in your career because we know what it is like to walk this path.
